In this video, the creator demonstrates a technique for creating coloring textures on the mod surface using hairspray.
You have to watch this video to really see what this does, but its a great technique for adding some beautiful abstract textures to a cast part.
Beyond casting, I think this technique could also be used to add a color layer to any resin part, by spraying the hair spran on the part, then adding the color, then adding a clear coat on top of that. I think that it might be interesting to experiment with multiple layers with different colors as well. If each are separated with a thin clear coat, one will build depth into their surface.
The creator notes that one should use a "firm or strong hold" hairspray and rather than misting the surface, he sort of dribbles it on by only slightly pressing the hair spray nozzle. After spraying the surface, it is left to dry (just 15-20 minutes), then it can be brushed with a mica powder or probably other colorants as well.
This technique is really quite interesting. Before the hairspray has dried, one could probably comb or brush it to give the texture a "brushed" appearance. One might also try dabbing it with a balloon or other large soft rubber to create "pressed" circles and untouched edges. Spacing out the balloon presses would likely yield a broader texture along with the more detailed texture from the dribbled hairspray. For those seeking to add some beautiful textures to their work, this technique is definitely one to explore.
